Keep Sewers Flowing

July 15, 2013 Wickenburg, AZ - Keeping the Town of Wickenburg's sanitary sewer system flowing continuously is a priority for the Public Works Department. When you use your toilet, sink, shower, washing machine or dishwasher, wastewater leaves your home through pipes that connect to the Town's sewer system.

Unfortunately, putting the wrong things down the drain can harm the pipes and other mechanical parts of the system, causing problems that can range from sewer line backups to major system failures. "Anyone who uses the Town's sewer system should be responsible for what they flush or pour down drains" stated Mark Lemon, Utilities Operations Manager. "It is becoming a frequent and costly problem."

What Should Be Flushed

Just because an item is called disposable does not mean it is safe to flush. Only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. Items such as cleaning wipes of any kind, cotton balls, bandages, plastics, dental floss, condoms, tampons, sanitary napkins, diapers, baby wipes or tissues should be bagged and put in the garbage.

Medications should be disposed of following FDA guidelines, which are typically spelled out in the patient information that accompanies the prescription. Citizens can also dispose of prescription medications they no longer need at any time by visiting the lobby of the Wickenburg Police Department through its Operation Medicine Cabinet program.

Fats, Oils & Grease

Fats, oils and grease (FOG) also cause sewer maintenance problems. "Never pour grease down your sink drain and try to use your garbage disposal less. These items coat the inside of pipes and the buildup can completely block sewer lines," according to Lemon. "This can create difficult and expensive maintenance problems for both the Town and private property owners."

"We know residents do not intend to damage the sewer system when they put these items down the drain," stated Vince Lorefice, Public Works Director. "It is simply a matter of public education that ultimately helps the Town keep sewer rates low."
